Anything Missing From My Sump?
Hi all,

Trying to make my tank is as stable as possible so want to ensure that I have the required equipment to keep it running smoothly to keep nitrates and phosphates down. Right now there's 22 Marine Pure balls, a Coral Box S150 skimmer, filter sock, and a small bag of Seachem's Phosguard (30ml) running in there.

I empty the skimmer cup as needed and change the filter sock out every week or less depending how dirty it gets, and the Phosguard has been going for 2 weeks now with Phosphates still measuring very low, 0.1 I think from when I tested on the weekend.

Tank currently has 2 Clowns, 1 Mandarin, 1 Turbo snail, 2 torches and a Palm Tree coral.

Water params currently sitting at:

Salinity: 1.023
Nitrates: closer to 0ppm on Sera test kit, but might get a different one for more accurate readings, it only goes from 0 to 10
Phospate: 0.1 on Sear test kit, might have to change this too :p
Calcium: 400 on Salifert test kit
Alkalinity: 9 on Salifert test kit

Right now WC is changing 10% every weekend as well.

Is there anything I should add to this or would this be sufficient for now? Only going to have a max of 6 fish, but who knows how many corals I will end up adding over the next few months o_0

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't be adding any other equipment right now - save the cash for when you have a problem you need to address. With that in mind, I would highly consider a couple of items to help get the core items completely under control:

1. Look into a temperature controller and a fan. You'd be surprised how much heaters can swing and how quickly a tank can get hot without a fan. A cheap $50 temp controller and a clip on desk fan can be a wonderful investment

2. Your salinity looks a little low, nothing terrible, but on the low side. Do you have an ATO as yet or are you manually topping off your tank? A quality ATO can make keeping a tank much easier and also keep that salinity stable

3. If and only if your phosphate starts rising and you cant reduce it, perhaps look into a little GFO reactor like a TLF150 with some suitable media (rowaphos, aquafores phoshate minus etc). That'll take care of your nitrates with no sweat.

Other than that, just enjoy the hobby. No need to buy gear for the sake of buying gear (unless you are like me who buys gear just for the sake of playing with it,,,, LOL)

How old is the tank? Whenever I see 0 Nitrates in a new tank I am suspicious of the quality of the test, but I am not familiar with Sera to give an opinion.

In addition to what Sam said, you can now start getting used to:
- Keeping Alk and Ca in balance. It isn't extremely important, but for a Alk 9Dkh the correct Ca would be 425ppm.
- Testing Magnesium.
- Making sure the parameters in the water changes are close to the tank water.
- Changing one thing at the time and finding out what impact it has in the water chemistry.

Lol, love that pic, I'm gonna have to keep it for future use.

Tank is a couple months old now.
Sera testing kits jump from 0 straight to 10, so I'm thinking I should get one with more readings in the lower range like Salifert or Red Sea instead.

Going to start slowly supplementing with calcium to bring it up to the 420ppm range as want the LPS we have to grow, plus we're going to be getting more LPS as well. Only softies and LPS here, no SPS for me :P

Going to invest in an ATO soon as we will be travelling for just over 1.5 weeks and want to ensure the tank is as stable as possible whilst we're away. Right now it's just a manual top off, but there's not too much evaporation yet.

Do love gadgets, but with having to save for a bunch of other stuff, will only get gadgets if absolutely necessary :p

Enjoying being back in the hobby, just wish we weren't renting so I could get the tank I really want, instead of the best option in case we have to move house :confused:

@Sam Parker if I did want to get a gadget because I'm a bit of a gadget freak, what exactly is meant to go in a reactor and what does it do.

I've seen lots of different types of reactors available with lots of different media that it's a bit mind boggling. Would one set up to reduce phosphates and nitrates together be a viable option? Most I can understand is that its for more gradual reductions with a long term fix compared to a quick drop and band aid solution.

Reactors are basically a plastic tube that you put media in (much like the media you have in a bag in your sump now) that you pump water through. It basically just forces water through the media a little more efficiently than just sitting in the sump. Lots of different brands, styles and prices. Phosphate is easy, lots of media options to remove phosphate - but nitrate is a little harder. There is bio pellets (which I don't recommend, but many others do), there is sulphur (which I personally do use), you could carbon dose (such as vinegar, vodka, sugar or something like RedSea's NoPox). Another option that is gaining traction of late is to use scoria in your sump with an air stone.

Anyway, lots of different approaches, here is a recent article on some lovely reactors from Aquaforest though:

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into a phosphate reactor as everything else seems to be stable right now. No nitrate creep or anything, as long as it stays looking more towards 0 than 10 on the test kits I'm happy. Phosphates seem a bit harder to control although with the feeding for the mandarin going on, that's to be expected.

Now just to decide which reactor and media to get :p
