what is your camera setup?
love the pics.
Canon 550D. Lenses: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro and 24-70mm f2.8L
Flash: ancient Cobra D400 (doesn't really work with the camera - have to use manual mode. saving for a real flash after I get a 70-200mm lens)

I'm afraid I know little about Nikon lenses, but if close up shots are your goal then a real macro lens (1:1 magnification) would be required. It's all about the glass...

can your macro get close enough to say a green ant to be able to see it well?
The lens can do 1:1 magnification. In other words, an object will appear life size on the sensor. The sensor on my camera is 22.3mm x 14.9mm, so I can fill make something that size fill the photo completely.

Tried a really low light shot. Street lighting only. Hand held, 6400 ISO.
