@All, i just got myself a NoPox today and intend to dose 2ml on daily basis for my CADE HL600 (220L).

I understand from the manual, this need to be added to Sump; which chamber should I add this to? Before or after protein skimmer?

Perhaps @Susan Bates ? Thanks!

Apology for such a silly question, i just want it to be safe for everyone in the tank than sorry.

PS: The one with highest flow is overflow chamber, but then this chamber is before protein skimmer ... would the nopox be skimmed before it even goes larger water column?

I have 4 chambers:
  1. Overflow
  2. Protein Skimmer
  3. Live Rocks
  4. Return Pump
I put mine in the return part but listen to Rob he knows heaps more than me

I shall @ReeferRob !

Can I ask quick question re Po4 & No3 test kits? @dimitri @Savage Henry @everyone, do you think the following test kits suffice for my Nitrate and Phosphate reduction project? so, Po4 = API & No3 = API. The API test kit for No3 matches the result from my LFS, so should I be changing the No3 test kit?

If anyone doesn't mind, can I post my diary here for NoPox and Nitrate reduction?

Day 1 (Saturday 9 Jan 2016): Dosed 2 ml.
Day 2 (Sunday 10 Jan 2016): Dosed 2 ml.
Day 3 (Monday 11 Jan 2016): Reading pH 7.4, No3 80 ppm & Po4 0.25 ppm. Dosed 2 ml.

if your LFS is using the API kits like most do because they are cheap then thats just confirming an already incorrect number.

from the test kits i have/had the NYOS & Salifert are best as per what everyone originally told me.

the Hanna egg is more accurate again, the salifer/nyos will basically give you a + or - .2 answer - so you in essence have a .5 gap and your true value lies somewhere in that range eg: PO4 might read 1 on the test kit but in effect it could be .08, .09, 1, 1.1, 1.2 - same for the other kids, and this can give you a reading inside or outside of your desired range when it gets multiplied by whatever factor or table/chart is in the book.

I'd say the API ones give you a very broad approximate number and when you are dealing with lots of money and stock like a lot of us are then that really is not good enough.

I got a feeling they don't use API, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I just bought API test kit from the aquarium shop near my workplace.

Current reading as of Monday 11 Jan 2016 3:00 pm:
Phosphate 0.25 ppm (very light clear blue).
Nitrate 80 ppm
pH 7.4

With that low pH and low Po4, should I continue dosing Nopox?

How far has it dropped from in how short a period of time?

Dropping PO4 will cause CAL and ALK to drop which is bound to PH which will drop and then could crash your tank.

You should be testing ALK and CAL as you drop PO4 and dose it accordingly so it doesn't drop out of acceptable range & bring PH down too.

Someone with more knowledge might be able to advise if simply using a Reef PH buffer like SEACHEM will bring all levels back up and in line or not, or do you still need to manually dose the others?

The reason I went with a reactor and a non GFO to bring down PO4 slowly was because of this, I didn't trust myself to make a mistake or the chemical additives.

With my tank, as per the instruction, i should be dosing approx. 4.5 ml (CADE HL600 = 200 litre minus LRs ... say true water volume is 150 litre).

As per my LFS suggestion, he said to start slow (2 ml per day).
I would assume it is 180l net. I have the same tank and whenever I dose any supplement and test it afterwards, the result is spot one. Which means the volume part of the formula is about right.

I don't consider API test kits as that bad as people say. They do the job well and cheaply, if you don't care about precise numbers. My expired API test kit yelds similar results to new Salifert and Red Sea kits. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve.
If you plan to keep sensitive corals like SPS, I would invest in a more accurate brand. My personal preference is Red Sea, because they are a reputable brand, I have no money to afford Hanna and no patience to read Salifert verbose instructions.

@Franklin Dattein I got heaps of live rocks, even in 1 chamber of my sump ... hmmm let say it's 180L net water .. so dosing should be 5.4 ml per day.

That is actually close to Aviad's (Red Sea) recommendation.

His dosing recommendation:
I would suggest you start with 3 ml per day and work your way up to 6 in a matter of weeks.
Maintain 6 ml until No3 levels drop and then start cutting back on dose.

His reply on low Po4, high No3 and low pH. I thought I share it with fellow reefers here:

Hi Harold,
If PO¬¬4 is at 0.25ppm it’s pretty high. You should aim at 0.1ppm at the most.
Use NOPOX every day. Use buffer to raise your Alkalinity to the recommended level according to your tank type.
See link below to our Reef Care Program recommendations.
http://www.redseafish.com/reef-care-program/reef_foundation_program/
If you maintain your Alkalinity the pH should balance accordingly.
With 80ppm of NO3 it would take about 5-8 weeks to drop.
Initially you will not see a drop but after 3 weeks or so the drop is rapid so make sure you don’t drop it too fast under 5ppm.
There are great videos for each part of our reef care program:
http://www.redseafish.com/reef-care-program/
Feel free to navigate and watch them.
All the best,

Thanks for the reply on test kit @dimitri @Franklin Dattein !

Got time on hand; did some pH, No2 & No3 test.

pH seems to have gone up after I aerated the room. :D
No2 has always been a beauty so far with 0 ppm. :)

There seems to be small reduction in No3 measurement; it is still high but orange color is a tad lighter. :(

Day 1 (Saturday 9 Jan 2016): Dosed 2 ml.
Day 2 (Sunday 10 Jan 2016): Dosed 2 ml.
Day 3 (Monday 11 Jan 2016): Reading pH 7.4, No3 80 ppm & Po4 0.25 ppm. Dosed 2 ml.

In regards to the API kits, one thing I noticed is that the Nitrate reference colour charts are somewhat different from the Reef and Saltwater kits. I now use the Red Sea Nitrate/Phosphate kit and I think it's very good, although a tad more expensive compared to the API.

I've been battling high Phos and Nitrates for some time and am about to embark on the Red Sea dosing regime as well - my refugium macroalgae and biopellets don't seem to be doing a good enough job for some reason.

TUNZE 9410 DOC Skimmer

Could that mechanical post filter sock (as seen on the left hand side of the above image) be the culprit of Nitrate factory?

I was thinking to myself and wonder, what can I clean from my system and come to mind, this skimmer was never ever cleaned (apart from the skim collection cup).

It looks like it's removable too as per their manual pdf (Removable post-filter at the outlet of the skimmer).

UPDATE: the post filter sock has been cleaned and yes, it is ultra super filthy!

Aaah and i thought I share it here in the forum .. yesterday I found 1 of my LR in the DT has some sort of white slime/fungus ... I remember in that particular spot, there's tube worm .. but looks like it's gone goneski ... and now covered in this white slime/fungus thingo .. I immediately removed it from the DT and off to the bin. I read few things about carbon dosing and this could be bacterial bloom, but is it really? I thought better safe than sorry ... if that white things turn into yellow, i heard it's harder to remove.

I noticed my water is clearer now ... I don't know is it because NoPox or the spring clean (filter sock in Tunze 9410 skimmer) that I did ... but No3 is still $h1t. I'm not giving up as yet, will carry on injecting NoPox on daily basis.

they don't look to be coming down, do they?
Apparently it does come down. I went to LFS to do full health check and here's the result:
  • Ca < 290
  • Mg 1000 mg/L
  • kH 6.7
  • Po4 0.05
  • No3 10 mg/L
  • Salinity 1.027
If according to this article, 90% of my elements are no good.

So today, as per my LFS recommendation, I will be dosing 50 ml of reef foundation A (Ca), 60 ml of reef foundation C (Mg) and 50 ml of reef foundation B (Buffer/Alk) and of course, the 3 ml injection of NoPox.

He said if following the manual, I should be dosing 100 ml of Ca, 120 ml of Mg & 100 ml of Alk but to take it easy and to start with half dose and take the water back to the shop tomorrow to check reading.

In saying that, NoPox does look to be effective in combating the Nitrate issue.
