Could I just use Purigen instead if activated carbon, or both ?

It depends on what aspect of your tank you are looking to improve.
If it is water clarity then use purigen. If you are looking to remove Heavy metals then use carbon.
But there is no problem with running both at the same time if you want/ need to.

I have used both and found carbon much more effective at polishing the water clarity.
