Spending My Summer Volunteering With Turtles With Ningaloo Turtle Program
Hey guys!
I didn't know who'd be interested in this but I wanted to post about it anyway :)
I do silently stalk forums and check out your TJ's.
All you guys and your amazing tanks.
Jesus. Tone it down a little.
I'm honestly not too sure where to start with this thread. I guess I've just loved reef/marine life for the longest of times; and I guess the more you read into it and learn about conservation ..it sparks something in you (...do not watch Blackfish unless you're keen on an ice-cream, tissues with a "side of emotional meltdown" sort of night). Having said that, I ain't no hippie (no offence to hippies in this thread).
I've known about the program for awhile and have previously been to visit Ningaloo Reef; please do yourselves a favour and go. It's spectacular!
So this program - well... you literally go out and help collect data for DPaW.
Y'know; all them turtley things; nests/false crawls, GPS coordinates of the sites, the species of turtles (you're working with endangered and critically endangered species; Loggerheads, Green Sea and Hawksbill turtles), you'll aid in rescues (they are - excuse my french - f _cking heavy), explore the area, climb endless sand dunes and gain legs of steel by the last week, spend the entire 2 months lying on beaches working on your new tan.
...Or tan lines if we're being specific.
And I think I forgot to mention. Hatchlings.
You get to see hatchlings!!!!
But whats a post worth if it's not balanced..
So - on the downside. You are awake at 4am.
And after a hard session of liver hardening drinking - yep. you will become flawless in this.
Life becomes all that more difficult on 4hours of sleep, a 3km (or more. seriously there are long beaches here) walk through soft sand in front of you and 40+ degree weather. And you will be swarmed by flies on certain beaches.
And my god do I hate flies.
The program runs from the beginning of December to mid January (yep, xmas and NYE with your new turtle pals - which. may i just add. friends for life after this.).
I don't know if you guys wanted any more information on the program, but can definitely recommend it to anyone who has a love for marine/reef life. Their website has all the details; http://www.ningalooturtles.org.au
Do it. Treat yourselves.
Help out the environment and makes some amazing friends in the process.
any questions; go ahead and ask away :) I will do my best to answer them :)
Has anyone else done a volunteering program like this?
