Test results from July 28th 2012

Tested water tonight and came up with the following:
Temp: 25
pH: 8.4 (API)
Alk: 9.688 (Hanna)
Salinity: 1.025 (Refractometer)
Ca: 428 (Hanna) - a little low has been steady on around 480-500.
Mg: 1320 (Salifert)
PO4: 0.00 (Hanna) - kit is working as RO tested 0.03. I might need to turn the reactor off for a week to get some Phos into the system now my algae issue is fixed
Everything is steady expect the Ca which seems to have dropped for the some reason this week. I will test again tomorrow - this might have been my first "inconsistent" reading which many users say they have issues with the Hanna Ca eggs.
Other than that the tank is coming along nicely...

Test results from 05th Aug 2012

Temp: 25.8
pH: 8.4 (API)
Alk: 9.352 (167 ppm) (Hanna)
Salinity: 1.025 (Refractometer)
Ca: 449 (Hanna) - better than last weeks reading which seems to be a 1 off lower reading
Mg: 1200 -(Salifert) - need to do a one off top up of Mg and get the dosing hooked up.
PO4: 0.04 (Hanna) - Finally something other than a 0.00 reading. Either the Rowaphos is exhausted finally or the increased feeding is adding a little more (or a combo of both).

  • I have increased the feeding dramatically as a couple of the tangs didn't appear to be their nice plumb selves.
  • Over the past week or so the algae on the glass seems a little more prevelant
  • When cleaning the glass the skimmer has collected a full cup of thicker skimmate overnight. Seems I need to put this on a timer to run less often to increase skimmate quality.
  • Clam is doing nicely.

All my params seem OK on paper and heading in the right direction - last tests on 22/2 were
  • Temp: 27.8 (seems to swing between low 26's and high 28's during the day - once the Halides are out this shouldn't swing so much)
  • pH: 8.49
  • Alk: 10.52
  • Salinity: 1.026
  • Ca: 432
  • Po4: 0.06
  • Mg: 1230

There have been lots of tests between, but for the sake of keeping an online record handy

  • Temp: 25.5 (lowered from 26 and it very stable with Winter, 1 halide and the STC-1000 controller)
  • pH: 8.55
  • Alk: 9.048
  • Salinity: 1.026
  • Ca: 493
  • Po4: 0.07
  • Mg: 1275
  • NO3: 80

I am using Randy's #2. I use 600g of Dampid + 9L of Ro for Ca, 700g of Baking Soda + 9L of RO for the Alk and previously have used Epsom salts for Mg. I have just switched to 100% Reef Safes 2 part mix for MG so it's 720g of Magnesium Sulphate and 1000g of Magnesium Cholride + RO to make it up to 3.8L

I'll need to keep and eye on the level to see if it changes and adjust the dosing schedule accordingly.

For the sake of recording it, here are the settings I use on my Marine Magic Dosing pump.

http://www.marinemagic-online.com/catalog/item/8196440/8892827.htm

awww.marinemagic_online.com_i_MM_ItemNew_1.jpg

Channel A: Alk
Channel B: Ca
Channel C: Mg

Channel A:
05:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
11:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
17:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
23:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3

Channel B:
02:00 | 5 mins | Speed 4
08:00 | 5 mins | Speed 4
14:00 | 4 mins | Speed 4
20:00 | 4 mins | Speed 4

Channel C:
03:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3

** Note: The Marine Magic Dosing pump has a feature which limits the maximum run time for any pump. I have this set to 2 mins, so in effect all the run times are actually 2 mins. I have to get around to reprogramming the unit to reflect this. It won't change the dosage.

Its only because I believe Tank Journals should be about the ugly as much as the glossy that I’ll post my last couple of Water test results here.

Normally I keep results around a consistent:

Alk: 156 ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.05 to 0.10 (Hanna)
Temp: 25.5 - 26
NO3: 4 - 10 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Mg: 1150 – 1200 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Salinity: 1.025 (Refractometer)
Ca: 450 ppm (Hanna)

After my recent sump upgrade (long story short it took much longer than excepted. Basically the tank was skimmer less, had no dosing and no water changes for weeks)

Once the sump was back online, I eventually got the Litermeter up and running (a few days after the sump was up and running) and am now doing 15L/day water changes. On the day I got the Litermeter running (8th Feb) my test results were:

Alk: 100 ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.33 (Hanna)
Temp: 25.5 - 26
NO3: 45 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Mg: 1140 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Salinity: 1.025 (Refractometer)
Ca: 495 ppm (Hanna)

We then left and went on holidays. The house sitter did nothing for the tank – the only feeding was via the autofeeder (8 times daily), ATO is automatic and I am using a third pump on the Litermeter to keep the skimmer cup empty (no neck cleaning, but at least the cup isn’t filling up).

Test results on 16 Feb:

Alk: 86 ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.35 (Hanna)
Temp: 28
NO3: 16 ppm (Red Sea Pro) (I suspect this is a little low and will re-test in a few days)
Mg: 1020 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Salinity: 1.026 (Refractometer)
Ca: 382 ppm (Hanna)

So moving forward I think my usage from a dosing perspective is:

8 Feb -> 16 Feb

Ca: 495 – 382 = 113ppm
Alk: 100-86 = 14ppm
Mg: 1140 – 1020 = 120ppm.

The above will shift a little as I work on correcting the low levels AND I will be doing some big waters changes weekly (in addition to the constant changes) to try and bring PO4 and NO3 down – once they are down a little I will start Vodka dosing again – I need to figure out how to automate this…

But for now

According to http://reef.diesyst.com/chemcalc/chemcalc.html and calculating for 700 litres (standard 8x2x2 minus some live rock, sandbed, etc) (I think 700 litres at 15L/day is a 15% water change per week)

I need to add:
Randy’s Recipe 2 Ca: 2.5L
Randy’s Recipe 2 Alk: 1L
Randy’s Recipe A&B: 2.6L

I’ll add the above in 4 equal doses over 2 days. I’ll also do a 200L water change and then re-test some time over the weekend. I’ll tweak the levels so I have them right and then try and start dosing on the consumption above.

The main risk is I am going away next Wednesday and am concerned about starting a dosing routine whilst away for a week. I won’t be getting my wife and kids to do water tests or adjust the dosing pump so doing may not start until I return, but at least I’ll have a better read on the consumption.

Since replacing the sump and letting the water quality slip I have lost 3 corals and now have horrible Algae/Dyno in patches. Nothing drastic, but a sure sign I need to get my act together. A quick syphon tonight should help that.

Anyway, we’ll see how the water is looking in a few weeks.

I think I need to keep this a little more updated (in case I lose my notebook) but frmo today I have params almost where I want them.

Alk: 146 ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.13 (Hanna)
Temp: 28
NO3: 12 ppm (Red Sea Pro) (I suspect this is a little low and will re-test in a few days)
Mg: 1260 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Salinity: 1.026 (Refractometer)
Ca: 451 ppm (Hanna)

I'm curerntly dosing 10ml Voka x2 times daily and PO4 and NO3 are dropping. I'll need to feed a little more as PO4 is dropping much faster than NO3 and will run out.

I've started the dosing again. Using Randy's 3 part mix.

Alk:
Channel A:
05:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
11:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
17:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3
23:00 | 4 mins | Speed 4

Channel B:
02:00 | 5 mins | Speed 4
08:00 | 5 mins | Speed 4
14:00 | 4 mins | Speed 4
20:00 | 4 mins | Speed 4

Channel C:
03:00 | 4 mins | Speed 3

The dosing pump has been reduced to 1:45 max run speed so ignore the 4 min pump times above - I'll adjust them back down when the room cools down - it's to hot in there today.

I don't update this everytime I test, however here are today's results.

Alk: 218 ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.14 (Hanna) (this actually went right down and is rising again as I have no Nitrates so Vodka dosing has stopped pulling it down)
Temp: 25.6 - right where I want it
NO3: < 0.25 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - Vodka dosing has nuked this back to virtual 0 so I need to start dosing some I think.
Mg: 1120 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - this has levelled out with dosing so all I need to do is manually bring it back up - hopefully it's set right.
Salinity: 1.027 (Refractometer)
Ca: 503 ppm (Hanna) - I have reduced the dosing by dropping pump speeds from 4 to 2.

I'm reduced dosing Vodka to 5ml x 2 times daily as my Nitrates dropped down to almost nothing. As a result PO4 is no longer dropping.

Slight tweak to the dosing so now it's set to:

Alk: (I need to reduce this - for now I have removed the tube and will let it slowly drop)
Channel A:
05:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
11:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
17:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
23:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3

Calcium
Channel B:
02:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
08:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
14:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
20:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2

Magnesium
Channel C:
03:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
09:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3

All 4 min pump times were set back to the cutoff of 1:45 as noted above.

So I hope:

Mg will now be set right and only needs to be bought up manually
Ca will hold steady by reducing the pump speeds (or even drop slightly)
Alk will need to be adjusted when it drops back down.

I'm also going to need to find a source of NO3 so I can bump it up and keep Vodka dosing. It worked really well until I ran out of Nitrates.

Time to start trying to lower my PO4.

As per http://thereefuge.com/threads/whats-a-good-source-to-add-no3-to-a-tank.14309/#post-177083 my Nitrates have bottomed out to < .25 (Red Sea Pro) consistently and I have backed off Vodka dosing to 1 x 5ml daily (cut back on 23/3/16). PO4 continues to slowly rise.

Latest test results on 2/4/16 were as follows.

Alk: 139 ppm (Hanna) - I have started dosing again and have reduced the dosing as per below. Hopefully it sits anywhere from where it is now to 150
PO4: 0.17 (Hanna) (slowly rising - I suspect because there is no NO3)
Temp: 25.6 - right where I want it
NO3: < 0.25 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - Started dosing today - see below.
Mg: 1140 ppm (Red Sea Pro)
Salinity: 1.027 (Refractometer)
Ca: 464 ppm (Hanna)

All in all things are pretty consistent.

Following on from http://thereefuge.com/threads/whats-a-good-source-to-add-no3-to-a-tank.14309/#post-177083 I have made a 1.5L mixture (150g of KNO3 / 1.5L RO) and will dose 3ml per day whilst still dosing 5ml per day Vodka.

I hop the bring PO4 down to 0.05 - 0.1 and have NO3 sit somewhere around the 4ppm. Once I figure out the right amount of NO3 mix and Vodka I'll look into if this can be dosed (I really hate doing *stuff* on my tank daily)

Dosing pumps are set to

Alk:
Channel A:
05:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
11:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
17:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
23:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3

Calcium
Channel B:
02:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
08:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
14:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
20:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2

Magnesium
Channel C:
03:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3
09:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 3

In the never ending search of stability here are this mornings results (NOTE: Tests were done shortly after NO3/Vodka dose)

Alk: 186 ppm (Hanna) - I have reduced dosing as per below.
PO4: 0.17 (Hanna) (seems to have stopped rising - maybe NO3/Vodka dosing, maybe a limitation of the test kit)
Temp: 25.6 - right where I want it
NO3: 1 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - Dosing is increasing NO3 nice a slow. Current rate of 3ml per day with 100g of powder to 1L RO)
Mg: 1050 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - seems to have dropped so have doubled dosing.
Salinity: 1.027 (Refractometer)
Ca: 464 ppm (Hanna)

All in all things are pretty consistent.

Adjusted Alk and MG pumps slightly

Dosing pumps are set to

Alk:
Channel A:
05:00 | 1:00 mins | Speed 3
11:00 | 1:00 mins | Speed 3
17:00 | 1:00 mins | Speed 3
23:00 | 1:00 mins | Speed 3

Calcium
Channel B:
02:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
08:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
14:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2
20:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 2

Magnesium
Channel C:
03:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 4
09:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 4
15:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 4
21:00 | 1:45 mins | Speed 4

So continuing along with results, here are today's tests - better than I thought (which was a nice surprise)

Alk: 180 ppm (Hanna)finally stable.
PO4: 0.13 (Hanna) (slowly dropping since NO3/Vodka dosing)
Temp: 25.6 - right where I want it
NO3: between 0.25 and 0.50 (Red Sea Pro) - as PO4 is slowly coming down I'll keep doing what i am doing. I suspect this is still the limiting factor.
Mg: 1060 ppm (Red Sea Pro) - stable so I will do a 1 off dump of MG to bring it up. I need to add about 3L of mix.
Salinity: 1.026 (Refractometer)
Ca: 490 ppm (Hanna)

Everything seems to have settled nicely. Still dosing 3ml of KNO3 and 5ml of Vodka once daily
