The Overly Long Overdue Update
Hey all! So apparently it's been about a year and half since I updated this journal thread. You can tell from previous photos that I've lost a lost of corals in that time.

I'll keep it short - basically, I got really sick late-ish 2015 and had to quit my job, was housebound waiting for specialist appointments and I had no energy to look after my tank. Care fell to my boyfriend, who did a pretty good job, but it was lacking that special attention.. Some corals just killed each other, others died from lack of care. Others showed me they could probably live in petrol.

In that time, the pump died, was replaced by something different, so the flow was off, and I think that contributed to things going downhill. It took months before I replaced it with the proper Aqua Medic pump. I also had to replace the impeller in the skimmer, as that had been playing up too.

Anywho, I'm on medication now, energy is back (it's nothing serious) and I've been trying to get the tank happy for the last few months.

It's a constant battle against green hair algae. I do water changes 1-2 times a week, sometimes more than 50%, stir the gravel, move everything, upset everyone and it's a nightmare.

It's also Aiptasia Paradise, which is kinda like Gansta's Paradise, but not as catchy. I have stuff for that, I just haven't killed the current occupants. Green hair algae is my current enemy.

Today is the happiest it's been for a while. The arrangement is temporary. I don't like anything touching the monster ricordea, but I was feeling a bit shit and wanted it done asap yesterday arvo.

I haven't got a phosphate test kit but we dose with Blue Life PhosRX which does help pulling the green hair algae from the rocks easier.

Arrghh, I accidentally hit submit, so I'll just upload the photo and shut up! @_@

Anywho! All I want is a tank where I don't have to rearrange to stir the gravel, upset everyone, and let things grow :p

Thank you all for reading! :)

It's not really looking that bad considering the lack of attention it has received over recent months - keep up the water changes and it will come back as good as ever.

Good to hear that your health is improving :)

It is so good to hear from you again, I was just thinking of you the other day and wonder where you had disappeared to.
It's also amazing to see the old Aqua Medic nano still going (despite the equipment replacement.)
Really hope your healthy keeps improving and keep posting.

Thank you! :) Twice-weekly waterchanges seem to be improving things! But picking at green hair algae is tedious. And snails are lazy. :p

Dave!! :) I haven't signed in since last year (but I do jump on here occasionally) so I only just got your private message earlier! >_>

I love the Yasha! I just feel so guilty for not giving it the care it needed when I was sick. I've lost a lot of pretty corals. (Although I had a lobo that was a coral magnet - corals were always falling into it and melting....and then it died :p) But certain corals in there have really surprised me how resilient they are. I even still have that red and green anemone I tried to glue to the rock last year XD He's sulking at the back somewhere.

Once the GHA is under control, I'll try and settle on a rockwork that works, doesn't trap detritus, and then fight with coral glue again for the little coral stragglers floating around. Things don't grow and spread because they get disturbed all the time.

I've just started noticing some coralline algae growth too, so hopefully that's a good sign too :) It's even on a snail!

Anyway, I'm rambling. Thanks for the message, Dave, and it's nice to be back :)

Also, I work from home now, making money from another hobby, so it's not all bad. :p

Long time no see! I was thinking about you the other day and wondering how you were going. I also was unwell and ceased work asa result. Don't be hard on yourself about the tank. It looks good!! It's nowhere near a disaster. Recently we had a busy period and I didn't do a water change for something like 2 months. We topped up fresh water and the big minerals. I also went to the local beach and brought back lots of snails and some small starfish from the rockpools. Somewhat oddly, the algae diminished as the creatures chomped on it and time went on.. when I finally did change 60L, I have had a fresh bloom of green algae. It's odd how the algae came along specifically because of the new salt water. I can't help but wonder what prompted the growth when phos on the RODI shows zero on the Hannah phos egg.

I guess what I am saying is just don't stress. Life is a journey none of us can predict. If the least you can do is top up fresh water and maybe toss in some minerals every so often, then you do that! You still have amazing and beautiful specimens from the ocean in a little box, enjoy the miracle that is life while you can. Xxxxxx

Hi Ezza! I'm sorry to hear that you're unwell too!

I agree about the tank - it could have been worse. It only went two weeks at the most without a waterchange sometimes (still got top ups) and cyano had a party in low flow areas before I replaced the pump with the right one. I've noticed that our snails are more actively eating algae this week, maybe because the water quality is better? They seem like they're actually working. Lazy freeloaders. :p

Thank you for the kind words, and take care of yourself! :)
