Pays To Check
Went and had a look at a car with my wife yesterday. She was looking for a secondhand late model Mazda 2. She has had one before and really liked it.
We had a look and a drive of a 2011 model that looked in really good condition and had quite low mileage 29K and was priced quite well compared to what was out there.
We told the guy we would think about it and get back to him even though we were pretty sure we would make him an offer and get it.
When I got home I ran the VIN number through Car History and it came up that it had been written off twice - best $36.95 I've ever spent.

nicely done! Were they selling the car unregistered? Otherwise how would it be registered if it was written off twice?

The car was registered - well, I was a little suspicious because the rego label was just sitting on the dash and not attached to the windscreen.
Apparently it had had 2 collisions that had been deemed "repairable write-offs"
