The December 2011 All I want for Christmas is my damn tank wet updates
Dec 1, 2011
Made an enclosure for the typhon. Most of electrics now received.

Could really do with spending another $100 on live rock, but I'm now busy every weekend until after Christmas, so no hope of getting some more any time soon :(

OK. So, given there's only a couple of paydays left this year, and I need to start getting the last of the bits to get this tank wet, I need to get some ideas on how much coral sand/crushed coral to buy..
Initially was gonna get the crap from the LFS, but they have bugger all, and last bag I bought of that was full of rubbish as well (still have a stack of it though).

Thinking http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/catalogue_products.php?prodID=5745&catID=93 which is a 3mm size.
The last calculator I tried suggested for 2 inch coverage, I'd need around 60kg. Sound about right? I have about 10kg of 2-3mm stuff floating around I could mix in with it. Really need to keep the substrate cost < $200.

I went bargain shopping with Synodontis yesterday. Firstly - their tank collection is epic, and that 10 footer is just amazing. I don't think I've ever quite been as in awe of a single tank in my whole life.
Anyway, this will be in parts, as some of the livestock in this collection is in a holding tank at Synodontis place as I really don't have the room for it all until this tank is built.
The livestock I did bring home is currently sleeping, just like I should be (got home at 11pm, went back the party I left at 4pm to go do this. Walked home a few hours ago).

My live rock collection:

Excuse the algae. I keep this tub on a light cycle. Been trying to kick the coraline into gear.

I set this tub up. I took his sand too as it wasn't deep, and I'll use it. I have more than that, but the rest will be rinsed out and dried until I want it. I just wanted to preserve a bit of life. Not sure that the big bit in the middle will stay there as I can't quite get it under water.

Not for this tank, but this Marisys 240 Series 2 was in the deal anyway. Needs some serious clean up, Might put it on the nano once it's current residents go to the 4x2.

So far we've covered about 30-40kg of extra live rock (I had 32kg in tubs already), about 30-40kg of sand and the Marisys.

More new additions:

The very illusive and hard to photograph flame angel

This poor bugger is stuck over in the corner as it's the only place I can put it far enough away from everything else until I know how big it is. Hard to get a photo of because of the angle.

And.. given that everything in the nano will wind up in this tank, here's a new FTS:

Missing is the flame goby - you can see it's tail above the scolly. Everyone bar Benny the blenny decided to hide for the shot :(
So... as it turns out, there is a lot more to come. The rest of my new acquisitions are at Synodontis house as Ken and Jen have so kindly offered to look after all of the stuff that I can't fit in the nano for a couple of months until the new tank is ready for stocking.
