Time To Introduce My Newly Acquired Breeding Stock
After having reasonable success with breeding Amphiprion ocellaris (and struggling to sell the offspring ) I have been planning my next challenge.

For some time I have been interested in the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) partly due to the threads posted up by @Dr. Schell. A few weeks ago I became aware of a hobbyist in the North of the State who was closing down his tank - he had a pair that had bred a number of times in his tank - if nothing else, that overcomes the problem of trying to pick a male and female .

After a few hiccups, I collected them this afternoon (1 February 2014) after a few hours on a bus from Launceston....

Excuse the coralline on the glass :rolleyes - this is just after the bag was put in my tank. By this evening they had settled in well and were attacking the pellets - my other fish have shown no interest from what I have seen. I assume the male is on the right ??

@Dr. Schell - from memory you also had yours in your display tank - how did you go about collecting the fry ?

This journal is being transferred over from an existing thread as the 'Tank Journal' format is ideal for documenting this breeding attempt. So that nothing is lost I will be copying over some of the existing posts.

always difficult to collect the fry once they are released from the parents in a DT. Best to net the male whist he is brooding the eggs. Keep him in the 'partitioned area' and release him once he releases the hatched babies. If he releases the eggs prematurely, use the artificial incubation technique that I posted on this forum (ie DYI egg tumbler). This will keep the eggs suspended in the water column and keep them aerated so that they can develop in the absence of the male).
Enjoy! I too have a pair that I'm hoping to breed, not overly fussed about raising the fry (will try) but very keen to see the father carry the egg's/fry :)

If you want to figure out male/female, check out the pics in this thread:

Yes, I have seen those pictures before - I will have a close look at mine once they have settled in.

For those that may not have been around here as long as me :rolleyes here are links to some threads that @Dr. Schell has posted previously - very good reading for anyone looking to breed these interesting fish.
