I had a laugh at some of the recommendations :p. I asked a similar question as you some time ago and this was my reply at the time:

You single guys are amazing :pI have got approval to spend $800 on new Tunze pumps - I have also got tentative approval to buy a new camera for around $1k and here you are increasing the cost by 100% :eek:You will learn, it might not be tomorrow, but you WILL learn.
I would highly recommend the Tamron 90mm macro lens - if you want to take half decent close up's of your tank then you will need a macro.

Nothing suitable at Costco in your range. Get it from Harvey.

Save your cash for either an upgrade down the track or some better glass...

good glass is what makes for a nice clean crisp image, this was taken on my 500D with a nice lens (10-22) sad i cant use it on my full frame camera :(

and this on the 6D with 24-105L, although the 24-105 isnt a very good landscape lens :P need to start saving :(
